Trump extends ceasefire and has ordered US forces to continue blockading the Strait
US President Trump posted on the social media platform ‘Truth Social’, stating that, given the severe divisions within the Iranian government, this development was to be expected; furthermore, at the request of General Asim Munir, Chief of the General Staff of the Pakistani Army, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, we have, at their request, temporarily suspended military strikes against Iran, pending the formulation of a unified negotiation proposal by the Iranian leadership and relevant representatives.
I have ordered the US military to maintain the blockade, whilst all other military forces remain on full combat readiness. We will extend the ceasefire until Iran submits the relevant proposal and all negotiations between the two sides have concluded.
Iran refuses to attend second round of Iran-US talks
According to a report by Iran’s Tasnim News Agency on the evening of the 21st, the Iranian side formally refused that evening to attend the second round of Iran-US talks scheduled for the 22nd in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan.
The report stated that the Iranian side believes the US is obstructing the reaching of any substantive agreement, and that participating in the talks would be a complete waste of time. Iran also announced this news via Pakistan, stating that in order to fully safeguard the rights of the Iranian people, the Iranian delegation would not be travelling to Pakistan on the 22nd.
Vance temporarily shelves plans to travel to Pakistan for talks with Iran
The Wall Street Journal reported on the 21st that, according to several sources familiar with the matter, US Vice President Vance has temporarily shelved his plans to travel to Pakistan that day for talks with Iran, following a series of intensive meetings within the White House.
The report stated that one source indicated that although Vance might still travel to Pakistan later this week, or even as early as that evening, US President Trump was privately discussing the possibility of cancelling the trip altogether. The source pointed out that this was due to Iran’s unwillingness to make concessions on the issue of uranium enrichment. Another source claimed that the decision was made because Iran had refused to commit to participating in the negotiations.
Federal Reserve Governor Waller Calls for Comprehensive Reform of Regional Fed Banks’ Operational System
On Tuesday, Federal Reserve Governor Waller outlined his vision for reforming the operational structure of the 12 regional Federal Reserve Banks within the Federal Reserve System, proposing that core business functions—including human resources, finance, procurement and information technology—be consolidated rather than managed independently and in a fragmented manner by each regional bank.
In a speech prepared for an event at the Brookings Institution in Washington, Waller stated: “We need to further centralise the management of operational functions under a unified national framework, moving away from the previous model where each Federal Reserve Bank operated independently and built its operational systems based on a single-institution mindset, and instead adopt a holistic, system-wide perspective for the Federal Reserve as a whole.”
As Federal Reserve officials are currently in a blackout period ahead of next week’s monetary policy meeting, Waller did not comment on the economic outlook or interest rate trends in this speech.
The US-Israel-Iran conflict is triggering the most severe energy crisis in global history
Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency, stated on the 21st that the US-Israel-Iran conflict is plunging the world into the most severe energy crisis in history. Birol noted that this energy crisis, compounded by fuel and gas supply issues stemming from the Ukraine crisis, has already had a massive impact. Approximately 20% of the world’s crude oil and liquefied natural gas is transported through the Strait of Hormuz.
Following the outbreak of the US-Israel-Iran conflict, shipping through the Strait has been disrupted, triggering turmoil in the energy markets. On 11 March, the International Energy Agency announced that its 32 member states had unanimously agreed to release 400 million barrels of strategic oil reserves to address the global oil supply shortages caused by the conflict. This marks the largest coordinated release of oil reserves by the International Energy Agency to date.
